“Imitate God!”
Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009“So imitate God as His dear children.” Ephesians 5:1
When I read this verse out of my Jewish bible recently, I was struck by how children imitate their parents. A child’s eyes will focus on the face of Mom or Dad and they will be saying what they hear and tilt their head the same way to imitate their parents. Our little two year old granddaughter fell when running up our ramp recently. She exclaimed “Dang” in just the same intonation her dad would have said. Then she jumped up and kept on running. It was so funny.
Some of you may have read this story of the wooden bowl but it is well worth a review.
THE WOODEN BOWL
Author Unknown
A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year-old grandson. The old man’s hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered.
The family ate together at the table. But the elderly grandfather’s shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth.
The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess. “We must do something about father,” said the son. “I’ve had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor.”
So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. There Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner. Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl.
When the family glanced in Grandfather’s direction, sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food.
The four-year-old watched it all in silence.
One evening, before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, “What are you making?”
Just as sweetly, the boy responded, “Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food in when I grow up.”
The four-year-old smiled and went back to work.
The words so struck the parents so that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done.
That evening the husband took Grandfather’s hand and gently led him back to the family table. For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled.
The bible encourages us to “focus your minds on the things above, not on things here on earth” Col. 3:12. Also, Phil 4:8 tells us to ‘focus your thoughts.’ We are natural imitators. A child must watch carefully what his parents are doing in order to imitate them. In the same way, we must gaze into the face of God if we want to imitate Him. You have probably read the verse in Psalms 32:8
“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.”
Do you remember when your mother instructed you so that you knew exactly what you were to do even though she hadn’t said a word? There was a simple look in her eye and the slightest twitch of her head and you knew you were to leave and do whatever. You would never have known had you not been looking at her. In the same way we need to keep focused upon our God if we want to understand His direction for us.
Also, we need to study the heart of God if we are to truly imitate Him. What is the heart of God like? Let’s take a moment and look at the heart of God expressed in this beautiful poem by Annie Johnson Flint!
HE GIVETH MORE
“He giveth more grace” – James 4:6
“He increaseth strength” – Isaiah 40:29
“Mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied” – Jude 2
He giveth more grace when the burdens grow greater.
He sendeth more strength when the labors increase;
To added affliction He addeth His mercy,
To multiplied trials, His multiplied peace.
When we have exhausted our store of endurance,
When our strength has failed ere the day is half done,
When we reach the end of our hoarded resources,
Our Father’s full giving is only begun.
His love has no limit, His grace has no measure,
His power no boundary known unto men;
For out of His infinite riches in Jesus
He giveth and giveth and giveth again.

Subject: UNITED STATES MAP – Short But Good!
A father wanted to read a magazine but was being bothered by his little girl, Shelby. She wanted to know what the United States looked like.
Finally, he tore a sheet out of his new magazine on which was printed the map of the country. Tearing it into small pieces, he gave it to Shelby and said, ‘Go into the other room and see if you can put this together. This will show you our whole country today.’
After a few minutes, Shelby returned and handed him the map, correctly fitted and taped together. The father was surprised and asked how she had finished so quickly. ‘Oh,’ she said, ‘on the other side of the paper is a picture of Jesus. When I got all of Jesus back where He belonged, then our country just came together.’
I think that would take care of all our problems. If we could but just focus on the face of God, and put Jesus back where He belongs in our lives, what a miraculous change would take place!
