How Old Is Grandpa?

Stay with this – the answer is at the end – it will astound you!

One evening a grandson was talking to his grandfather about current events. The grandson asked his grandfather what he thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general.

The granddad replied, “Well, let me think a minute, I was born, before television, penicillin, polio shots, frozen foods, Xerox, contact lenses, Frisbees and the pill.

“There was no radar, credit cards, laser beams or ball-point pens.

“Man had not invented pantyhose, air conditioners, dishwashers, clothes dryers, and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and man hadn’t yet walked on the moon.

“Your grandmother and I got married first-and then lived together. Every family had a father and a mother.

“Until I was 25, I called every man older than I, ‘Sir’ – and after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, ‘Sir.’

“We were before gay-rights, computer-dating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy.

“Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense. We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions.

“Serving your country was a privilege; living in this country was a bigger privilege. We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent.

“Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins.

“Draft dodgers were people who closed their front doors when the evening breeze started.

“Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends; not purchasing condominiums.

We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, Des, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings. We listened to the Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President’s speeches on our radios.

“And I don’t ever remember any kid blowing his brains out listening to Tommy Dorsey.

“If you saw anything with ‘made in Japan’ on it, it was junk. The term ‘making out’ referred to how you did on your school exam. Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, and instant coffee were unheard of.

“We had 5 and 10 cent stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents. Ice cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a nickel. And if you didn’t want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail one letter and two postcards.

“You could buy a new Chevy Coupe for $600 but who could afford one? Too bad, because gas \was 11 cents a gallon. In my day, ‘grass’ was mowed, ‘coke’ was a cold drink, ‘pot’ was something your mother cooked in and ‘rock music’ was your grandmother’s lullaby. ‘Aids’ were helpers in the Principal’s office, ‘chip’ meant a piece of wood, ‘hardware’ was found in a hardware store, and ’software’ wasn’t even a word.

“And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby. No wonder people call us ‘old and confused’ and say there is a generation gap. …and how old do you think I am???”

This man would be only 58 years old!

Quote taken from www.tedgrier.com

Grandchildren are the crown of the aged and the glory of children is their fathers.”Prov. 17:6

I do love being a grandma. We recently had our 5-year-old grandson stay at our home overnight. How delightful it is to spend those hours with this marvelous little fellow. So much life and curiosity! Every one of them are a treasure and indeed a gift from God!

Grandparents and Grandchildren chuckles

My young grandson called the other day to wish me Happy Birthday. He asked me how old I was, and I told him, ‘62.’ He was quiet for a moment, and then he asked, ‘Did you start at 1?’

After putting her grandchildren to bed, a grandmother changed into old slacks and a droopy blouse and proceeded to wash her hair. As she heard the children getting more and more rambunctious, her patience grew thin. Finally, she threw a towel around her head and stormed into their room, putting them back to bed with stern warnings. As she left the room, she heard the three-year-old say with a trembling voice, ‘Who was THAT?’

A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like: ‘We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made From a tire; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods.’ The little girl was wide-eyed, taking this all in. At last she said, ‘I sure wish I’d gotten to know you sooner!’

My grandson was visiting one day when he asked, ‘Grandma, do you know how you and God are alike?’ I mentally polished my halo while I asked, ‘No, how are we alike?’ ‘You’re both old,’ he replied.

When my grandson Billy and I entered our vacation cabin, we kept the lights off until we were inside to keep from attracting pesky insects. Still, a few fireflies followed us in. Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, ‘It’s no use, Grandpa. The mosquitoes are coming after us with flashlights.’

A nursery school teacher was delivering a station wagon full of kids home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children started discussing the dog’s duties.
‘They use him to keep crowds back,‘ said one child.
‘No,’ said another, ‘he’s just for good luck.’
A third child brought the argument to a close. ‘They use the dogs,’she said firmly, ‘to find the fire hydrants.’

Live An Abundant Life

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Life is truly an adventure! Who could possibly dream all the things that happens in a lifetime? We kids had vivid imaginations but never could we have imagined the excitement experienced these past 65 years that I have been alive.

My mother told me during the last five years of her life, “Marnie, do you know why they call the last years of your life the Golden Years? I’ll tell you,” she continued, “They call them the Golden Years because they’re the best years of your life!”enjoy

I’ve thought a lot about that statement. She went on to explain how she enjoyed all of her life. She loved her babies. She embraced their growing up years. She reveled in her adult children. She delighted in her life as Charlie’s wife. Life had been good to her was her feeling. Why then did she feel that way? She said, “Marnie, it takes a lifetime to get ready for old age. Sure I have more aches and pains but life is so sweet. I feel my husband’s encompassing love more than ever but the most precious thing is that now I feel closer to Jesus than I ever have.”

Jesus said: “…I have come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly!” John 10:10

What is abundance? A man who had been raised in a terrible home environment (lots of money without love plus abuse) once made the following tragic statement to me, “I would trade with your children if I could. They could have my parents with all their money if I could have their parents with all their love.” From this statement we conclude that abundance is not money and possessions.

HIMSELF

by A. B. Simpson

Once it was the blessing, now it is the Lord;

Once it was the feeling, now it is His Word.

Once His gifts I wanted, now the Giver own;

Once I sought for healing, now Himself alone.

Once ’twas painful trying, now ’tis perfect trust;

Once a half salvation, now the uttermost.

Once ’twas ceaseless holding, now He holds me fast;

Once ’twas constant drifting, now my anchor’s cast.

Once ’twas busy planning, now ’tis trustful prayer;

Once ’twas anxious caring, now He has the care.

Once ’twas what I wanted, now what Jesus says;

Once ’twas constant asking, now ’tis ceaseless praise.

Once it was my working, His it hence shall be;

Once I tried to use Him, now He uses me.

Once the power I wanted, now the Mighty One;

Once for self I labored, now for him alone.

Once I hoped in Jesus, now I know He’s mine;

Once my lamps were dying, now they brightly shine.

Once for death I waited, now His coming hail;

And my hopes are anchored, safe within the Vail.

Emotional healing is desperately needed for the painful hurts and blows that life deals us at one time or another. Paul tells us to put yesterday behind us and start fresh today, looking forward to Jesus’ strength and power.

Inner Healing

by Marvine Scott

Memories –

Lord, wash away

The hurt and pain

Of yesterday.

Make my thoughts

Pure and clean.

Sing Oh heart

Praises to your King.

I forgive the one

Who caused me pain.

The peace it brings

Is awesome gain!

Focus on the good.

Give to God the bad.

My hand in His.

My days are glad!

GLASS OF MILK

“One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.

“Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, ‘How much do I owe you?’

“’You don’t owe me anything,’ she replied. ‘Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness.’

“As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit.

“Many year’s later that same young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease.

“Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room.

“Dressed in his doctor’s gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once.

“He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to her case.

“After a long struggle, the battle was won.

Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She read these words…

“’Paid in full with one glass of milk’ (Signed) Dr. Howard Kelly.

“Tears of joy flooded her eyes as her happy heart prayed: ‘Thank you.’”

Both of these people learned a secret regarding the Abundant Life offered by Jesus. May each of us learn the secret as well.

Love Like God Does

Friday, February 13th, 2009

As we celebrate Valentine’s Day in America, our thoughts turn to the subject of “LOVE.” As schoolchildren, we exchange Valentine Cards and have a party in school. What a fun day! As adults, we find ways to show our love to each other. On our first Valentine’s Day, my husband had flowers delivered! Many have said I have been truly spoiled by my dear husband these many years, and they are correct!

Here is a cute bit of trivia for your enjoyment this Valentine’s Day:

Diamond Engagement Rings

“The first diamond engagement ring was presented in 1477 by Archduke Maximilian of Austria to Mary of Burgundy.”

The Longest Engagement

“Sixty-seven years, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. The happy couple finally wed at age eighty-two!”

Morning Kissing

“Studies indicate that a man who kisses his wife good-bye when he leaves for work every morning averages a higher income than those who don’t. Husbands who exercise the rituals of affection tend to be more painstaking, more stable, more methodical, thus, higher earners. Studies also show that men who kiss their wives before leaving in the morning live five years longer than those who don’t.”

Red Roses

“Red roses are the most popular flower to give on Valentine’s Day, and although they may all look the same to the untrained eye, there are actually more than nine hundred different varieties of dark-red and medium-red roses.”

The World’s Best Bathroom Book (Honor Books c2005) p.127-128

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you.” John 15:12

Jesus’ commands us to love each other the same way that He loved us! Wow! Have you thought about what that means? Think of just His humbleness, giving to others without thought to His own needs, plus compassion! Are we to imitate that? What does it mean to love like God loves? Here are a few things that reveal God Love.

  • SOURCE OF LOVE: God Is Love. 1 John 4:7 says we cannot even truly love each other without His Love

  • EXPRESSES LOVE: God declares His love for us. (John 16:27; Jeremiah 31:3)

  • OFFERS LOVE: God’s Love paid for our sins and He offers forgiveness (John 3:16,36)

  • DEMONSTRATED LOVE: God adopted us into His family (Romans 8:15).

  • SECURE LOVE: Nothing can separate us from God’s love. (Romans 8:38-39)

  • HELPFUL LOVE: God is there to pick us up and help us in our need (Psalms 27:10; Heb. 13:5)

  • PROTECTIVE LOVE: God’s Love Protects us from evil. (2 Thess. 3:3-5)

  • HEALING LOVE: God’s Love casts fear out of our lives (1 John 4:18)

  • CONTINUING LOVE: Loving One Another shows that God’s love is living in us (1 John 3:16; 1 John 4:7-8)

Teach Us To Live

by Helen Steiner Rice

God of love – Forgive! Forgive!

Teach us how to truly live,

Ask us not our race or creed,

And let us know You love us, too

And that we are a part of You…

And someday may man realize

That all the earth, the seas and skies,

Belong to God who made us all,

The rich, the poor, the great, the small,

And in the Father’s Holy Sight

No man is yellow, black or white,

And peace on earth cannot be found

Until we meet on common ground

And every man becomes a brother

Who worships God and loves each other.

A dear friend of ours, Marie Hiatt from a nearby Nursing Home, has an interesting clue for us on how to love like Jesus did. We need to be grateful to Jesus for He has given us so much. We need to focus on Him and learn His methods from study of the Bible. We need to seek the power of the Spirit in our endeavors and we need to respond to our precious Lord’s leading. Listen to Marie share; for she truly loves like Jesus does.

WHY DO MIRACLES SEEM RARE IN THE CHURCH TODAY?

By Marie Hiatt, Nursing Home 1-30-09

I suggest four reasons for fewer miracles today.

  1. God has given us the gift of medicine which we gratefully use but this reduces the need for Divine healing as the only recourse as in many cultures.

  2. As an affluent country, even believers tend to focus on enjoying blessings more than seeking the One who blesses.

  3. Much of the ministry in many churches focus on human organizations, charismatic techniques and promotion rather than earnestly seeking the Holy Spirit Power.

  4. Until we respond to the leading of the Holy Spirit to attempt the humanly impossible, we will limit ourselves to what is humanly possible.

Spiritual flabbiness does not translate into power for miracles or spiritual harvest. We need to pray for a revival church that will manifest the Power of God!

I PRAYED FOR YOU TODAY

by Marie Hiatt

Even though I wasn’t sure

Exactly what to say,

I talked to God and spoke your name:

I prayed for you today.

I asked the Lord to give you strength,

To calm you from your stress.

To free you from the things you fear

And bring forth your mind with rest.

I asked the Lord to help you in the

Uphill days to come.

I asked our Precious Loving God

To complete what He’s begun.

He whispered in the quiet and

Filled my heart with peace.

He said that you are deeply loved

And His love won’t cease.

End quote, Marie Hiatt Nursing Home

“These three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. Follow the way of love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13-14:1
